MADRID, Spain -- Maria Sharapova avoided an early exit from the Madrid Open on Tuesday, rallying to beat Christina McHale to reach the third round while Roger Federer withdrew from the mens event. Trailing 4-1 in the final set, Sharapova steadied her erratic service game and took command again to beat the 56th-ranked American 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 on clay at the Magic Box tennis centre. The ninth-ranked Russian looked to be cruising before McHale broke late in the second set to tie the match and then took her commanding lead in the final set after breaking Sharapova. However, Sharapova didnt surrender a point after that as McHale netted to be broken to see her advantage dip to 4-3, and Sharapova eventually fired an ace down the middle to eliminate McHale for the second year running. "After a really good start (in Madrid) I didnt keep that level. I think I had a bit of a letdown," said 2013 finalist Sharapova, who is coming off a tournament victory in Stuttgart. Earlier, Li Na continued her recent dominance of Zheng Jie by easing into the third round 6-2, 6-3 for her fourth straight victory against her fellow Chinese player. Zheng hasnt won a set from the second-ranked Li since her last victory in 2006. Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic also advanced with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia, while American Sloane Stephens was also a winner. Federer pulled out of the Masters Series event to spend more time with his family as his wife awaits the birth of another child. The fourth-seeded Swiss player is the second big name to withdraw after Novak Djokovic pulled out because of a wrist injury. Polands Lukasc Kubot takes Federers place to face Gilles Simon of France. David Ferrer struggled through Madrids high altitude and a bout of nerves to pull out a 7-6 (6), 5-7, 6-3 victory over Spanish countryman Albert Ramos. Ferrer saved four set points as he won five straight points to take the first set tiebreak, clinching the lead with a crosscourt forehand smash. After being broken to trail 6-5 in the second set, Ferrer reeled off four straight errors for his 115th-ranked opponent to even it before eventually pulling through in just under three hours. But it wasnt without repeated scenes of frustration when he mumbled to himself and his entourage nearby. "You say things when youre nervous in the match that you dont have a feel for. You can write a book about a match," said Ferrer about his motivation, before referring to thinner air and its effect on the ball. "The first day is not easy. You miss more, but thats all." Fabio Fogninis recent struggles on Spanish clay continued as the 13th-seeded Italian lost 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to Ukraines Alexandr Dolgopolov. Fognini failed to get out of the second round at Barcelona last month. Nicolas Almagro will play Andy Murray next after finally dispensing with Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan, 6-3, 6-7 (9), 7-6 (4) with his 11th match point. Other second round winners included Canadas Milos Raonic, Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, South Africas Kevin Anderson, Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands, and Juan Monaco of Argentina -- who goes on to play defending champion Rafael Nadal on Wednesday. No leaks, no whispers, nothing.MANCHESTER, England - Six years into their reign and Manchester Citys ambitious Abu Dhabi owners continue to change the landscape of English soccer.Initially, it was about short-term success, spending more than $1 billion on the squad to move a plucky, underachieving club out of the giant shadow of its city rival Manchester United to the top of the English game. With two Premier League titles and two domestic cups since 2011, that box has been ticked. Now for the next phase. On Monday, the English champions officially opened their lavish $300 million training and player-development centre — the City Football Academy. A muddy wasteland with no opportunities in a neglected area has been regenerated into a sprawling, 80-acre state-of-the-art campus.Connected to the clubs Etihad Stadium by a bridge, it houses all of Citys teams — from the under 8s to Manuel Pellegrinis senior side — has 16 1/2 pitches, a 7,000-capacity stadium for the Citys top youth team along with educational facilities and accommodation.Forget the recent signings of superstars Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and David Silva. City says this facility is the clubs most important investment — and unlike anything English football has ever seen.In a rare public appearance, City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said Monday the academy aimed to be something that would truly differentiate the club as a leader in the world of football, representing the first stage of fulfilling a promise made when the Abu Dhabi United Group took over in 2008.Inspiration was taken from AC Milans Milanello training facility, Barcelonas famed La Masia academy from which Lionel Messi is the most famous graduate, the Australian Institute of Sport and NBA team New York Knicks MSG Training Center, among others. It isnt, though, a copy-and-paste job, says academy director Brian Marwood. There are some special touches. Sleep experts designed thhe players bedrooms, there are rooms for cryotherapy and a hypoxic chamber with treadmills where players can train in different temperatures.dddddddddddd(You want) the club that will give you the best chance, former France midfielder Patrick Vieira, who is the head of Citys Elite Development squad, said Monday about attracting the worlds best youngsters. Because at that age, you dream about being a first-team player. I think when you look at these facilities, that will be an easy choice.United may have something to say about that.Still the biggest club in England, United has a track record of bringing youngsters through the youth teams and into the first team. Recently hired Dutch coach Louis van Gaal, despite spending $250 million pounds on top, mostly foreign players over the summer, appears intent on continuing that tradition.During Citys recent rise to the top, home-grown players have hardly had a look-in. To many, that needs to change if the new training academy is to be considered a success. We know how difficult it will be to make it, Vieira said, ... but when you have a facility like this, you give yourself the chance.Marwood pointed to the fact that City had two teenagers on the bench in the recent league match at Sunderland, and that 18-year-old Spaniard Jose Pozo played nearly an hour of Saturdays 1-0 win over Everton. Twelve players under the age of 21 are currently out on loan.Sheikh Mansour, Citys owner, said in 2008 that the clubs leaders are building a structure for the future, not just a team of all-stars. The demands of UEFAs Financial Fair Play rules make that a necessity.Understandably, Vieira didnt want to give a timeframe about when he thought the first academy product would make it into Citys top team. But given his winning mentality as a player and the ambitions of Citys owners, expect it to happen sooner rather than later.
